Match the tag, unit group and residency category

Nevada’s big-game tables distinguish species, legal animal, resident or nonresident hunt, weapon and unit group. Most tags are allocated through a computerized draw; leftover and returned tags follow separate programs. Read each matching record’s hunter category and rules, and use NDOW’s table for your residency and tag rather than assuming that the same unit has the same opportunity or quota.

Official guidance: Match the tag, unit group and residency category

Get the license, education and bird permissions you need

Review Nevada’s age and hunter-education requirements when purchasing a license. Most upland opportunities use a hunting license, while turkey, snowcock and some other hunts have additional permissions. Migratory-bird hunters must separately check Nevada HIP validation and any required federal waterfowl stamp. A license purchase does not replace a species tag or area reservation.

Official guidance: Get the license, education and bird permissions you need

Read the rules for the actual WMA or parcel

Nevada WMAs can have different entry, vehicle, weapon and ammunition restrictions. For example, Argenta WMA permits only shotguns and archery equipment for hunting and restricts shotgun shot. Check NDOW’s property descriptions along with the current regulation and posted conditions. An open statewide season does not override a closed area or provide permission to cross private land.

Official guidance: Read the rules for the actual WMA or parcel

Complete the required big-game questionnaire

NDOW requires a Big Game Harvest Questionnaire even when the hunter did not harvest an animal. The department links that reporting requirement to eligibility for the next tag application season. Review the deadline and submission instructions for your hunt rather than waiting until you next apply.

Official guidance: Complete the required big-game questionnaire

Nevada hunting FAQs

When is Nevada’s regular chukar season in 2026–2027?

Oct. 17, 2026 through Feb. 7, 2027, in designated open areas. Chukar and Hungarian partridge share the combined limit in the current regulation.

Are the deer and elk dates statewide?

No. Each record applies to its listed unit group, legal animal, method and hunter category. Read its rules and use the exact official hunt table for your residency and tag.

Does a general hunting license cover every Nevada bird hunt?

No. Some hunts require a tag, permit or reservation. Migratory-bird hunters must also check Nevada HIP validation and applicable federal stamp rules.

Must I report an unsuccessful big-game hunt?

Yes. NDOW requires the Big Game Harvest Questionnaire regardless of harvest success. Check your reporting deadline before the next application period.
