Use the exact hunt number and the correct booklet

Arizona separates its main fall rules, elk/pronghorn draw information and spring hunts into different publications. A four-digit hunt number identifies the draw choice; match the unit, dates and legal animal on your permit-tag. Use AZGFD’s draw page to check applications and leftover permits. A season appearing in this table does not make a tag available.

Official guidance: Use the exact hunt number and the correct booklet

Understand permit-tags and nonpermit-tags

Some Arizona hunts use a draw-issued permit-tag, while specified opportunities use an over-the-counter nonpermit-tag. The latter still has species, season and area restrictions. OTC archery deer hunts also have unit-and-species harvest limits. Check the live status before a trip rather than treating a printed date as a guarantee that the unit remains open.

Official guidance: Understand permit-tags and nonpermit-tags

Check unit boundaries and the place you will hunt

Start with AZGFD’s regional game-management-unit maps. The department identifies those maps as reference material and directs hunters to R12-4-108 for legal unit descriptions. Confirm the actual parcel and access route, then check the hunt’s exclusions and any refuge or local restrictions. A unit boundary is not a grant of access to every parcel inside it.

Official guidance: Check unit boundaries and the place you will hunt

Keep harvest reporting separate from the season dates

Arizona requires OTC archery deer, black bear and mountain lion harvests to be reported within 48 hours. Bear and lion harvests also require a physical inspection within ten days. AZGFD provides separate voluntary hunter questionnaires, so completing one does not replace a mandatory report. Review the species instructions before leaving the field.

Official guidance: Keep harvest reporting separate from the season dates

Arizona hunting FAQs

When does Arizona quail season open in 2026?

The general Gambel’s, scaled and California quail opener is Oct. 16. Mearns’ opens Dec. 4. Both close Feb. 7, 2027 in their listed open areas.

Is there one statewide Arizona deer season?

No. Use the specific hunt number, unit, dates and legal animal in the current deer Commission Order. Filter the saved snapshot by deer species and method, then read each matching record’s zone and rules.

Can I buy an OTC tag and hunt any open elk season?

No. Nonpermit-tags apply to designated nonpermit-tag opportunities. Check the elk booklet and required OTC elk handout for the exact hunt area and season.

Do OTC archery deer harvests need a report?

Yes. Report the harvest within 48 hours using AZGFD’s mandatory reporting system, and check live unit closures before hunting.

Plan a hunt by location and date

Use Hunterizer to look up hunting information by location and date. Compare the result with the current official rules and any property-specific conditions. For another state, visit the state hunting regulation directory.
