The table includes every season record in the supplied snapshot. A matching date does not establish an open GMU, license availability, legal animal or permission to enter land.

Start with the GMU and hunt code

Colorado dates are tied to a license, not just a species. Check its GMUs, legal sex, season and method before choosing a route. Plains deer seasons can differ from western seasons, and a unit number alone does not show that your particular license is valid there.

Official guidance: Start with the GMU and hunt code

Choose the right license route

Limited licenses use draws; other opportunities may be available as leftovers or over the counter. A qualifying license is required before applying for the big-game draws. Colorado generally requires approved hunter education for people born on or after January 1, 1949. Check residency, education and Habitat Stamp requirements before purchase.

Official guidance: Choose the right license route

Check access separately

Walk-In Access properties are entered on foot and must have the program’s boundary signs. Some allow big game; others are restricted to small game, waterfowl and furbearers. Access dates do not extend a species season. Match the current parcel listing and posted restrictions to your hunt.

Official guidance: Check access separately

Plan CWD sampling before the trip

For 2026, CPW requires CWD sample submission for rifle-harvested elk from selected hunt codes. Not every hunt code in a selected GMU is included. CPW lists no mandatory testing for deer in the 2026 seasons. Check the official hunt-code list and sampling instructions before leaving home.

Official guidance: Plan CWD sampling before the trip

Colorado hunting FAQs

When is Colorado’s 2026 first rifle elk season?

The general first-rifle reference is October 14–18, 2026. Your license determines the valid GMUs and legal animal.

Can a nonresident buy an archery elk license over the counter?

The western archery structure uses limited licenses for nonresidents. Do not assume resident OTC opportunities also apply to nonresidents; check the current brochure and license listing.

Where are Colorado’s upland and waterfowl dates?

Filter the table by species, method and zone to see the upland and waterfowl records supplied in the snapshot. Compare the matching record with CPW’s current Small Game and Waterfowl brochure. Waterfowl dates depend on flyway and zone; a small-game license, HIP registration and applicable stamps are separate checks.

Does a hunting license open every Walk-In Access parcel?

No. Check the parcel’s authorized species, access dates and signs. Only designated parcels permit big-game hunting, and entry is on foot.

Plan a hunt by location and date

Use Hunterizer to look up hunting information by location and date. Compare the result with the current official rules and any property-specific conditions. For another state, visit the state hunting regulation directory.

Official Colorado hunting sources

Table data: Hunterizer season snapshot received October 17, 2026. Agency updates, emergency closures and individual hunt conditions can change the applicable rules. Check the current official sources linked above before hunting or trapping.
