Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) has announced that resident capped elk zone tags for nearly all capped elk zones will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. MDT on July 8, 2026. These tags are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, available at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com and are expected to sell quickly for many of the state’s most popular elk hunting areas.
The only exception is the Sawtooth Elk Zone, which follows a separate schedule. Half of the Sawtooth tags will be available at Idaho Fish and Game offices and licensed vendors beginning at 10:00 a.m. MDT on July 10, while the remaining half will go on sale online and by phone at 1:00 p.m. MDT the same day.
To see how many tags are available, go to Fish and Game’s resident capped elk zone webpage.
Who Can Buy a Tag?
Resident hunters who hold a valid 2026 Idaho hunting license and did not apply for a controlled elk hunt are eligible to purchase a capped elk tag as soon as sales begin.
Hunters who applied for a controlled elk hunt—even if they were unsuccessful—must generally wait five days before purchasing a capped elk tag. Exceptions apply for hunters who only applied for extra controlled hunts, Super Hunt tags, or depredation hunts.
Prepare Before the Sale
Because demand is extremely high, IDFG recommends hunters prepare well before sales open.
Hunters should:
- Verify or create their GoOutdoors Idaho account before sale day.
- Make sure their hunter education certification is on file if required.
- Ensure archery certification has been submitted if purchasing an archery tag.
- Update the Idaho Fish and Game mobile app if planning to purchase through a mobile device.
- Have a valid 2026 hunting license before purchasing online, or purchase the license at the same time as the tag.
Virtual Waiting Room Returns
As in recent years, Idaho Fish and Game will use a virtual waiting room for online purchases.
Hunters who enter the waiting room before 10:00 a.m. MDT will be assigned a random place in line when sales begin. Logging in earlier does not improve your position, but arriving after 10:00 a.m. places you at the back of the queue. Only one device may be used per customer, and browser cookies must remain enabled to avoid losing your place in line.
Once a tag is placed in a shopping cart, hunters have 30 minutes to complete the purchase before the reservation expires. Purchase confirmation emails may take up to 24 hours due to heavy demand, and physical tags will be mailed within approximately 10 business days.
Expect Popular Zones to Sell Out Quickly
Several capped elk zones routinely sell out within minutes or hours of opening. Because tags are sold simultaneously online, over the phone, at regional offices, and through license vendors, there is no real-time count of remaining tags during the sale. Fish and Game will post sold-out notices as quickly as possible, although updates may lag behind actual sales.
Hunters planning to visit a Fish and Game office should also note that camping or lining up overnight is not permitted at IDFG regional offices or headquarters.
