Hunterizer App Updates 2026 California Big Game Seasons: More Opportunity for Bear, Elk, and Bighorn Sheep Hunting

See what you can hunt at your location in the Hunterizer Seasons app.

Following the official publication of the 2026 Big Game Digest by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Hunterizer app has already integrated the latest season dates, tag allocations, and regulation summaries—giving hunters a clear, early look at what’s shaping up to be a strong year in the field.

Several proposed changes—currently pending adoption by the California Fish and Game Commission at its April 2026 meeting—stand out as major wins for hunters across the state.

Major Expansion for Black Bear Hunting

Bear hunters in California could see one of the most meaningful access expansions in recent years. The Northeastern California Bear Conservation Region is being opened to hunting within the existing statewide harvest threshold of 1,700 bears.

This change effectively opens full access to multiple X-zones, including X2, X3A, X3B, X4, X5A, X5B, X6A, and X6B—areas that were previously off-limits for bear hunting. For hunters willing to explore these new and less-pressured areas, this could significantly improve success rates and reduce competition.

Two Bear Tags Per Hunter

Another notable update: hunters will now be able to purchase two bear tags at the same time. While the daily bag limit remains one bear per day and the overall harvest cap stays unchanged at 1700 per season, this added flexibility gives hunters more options across the season and increases overall opportunity.

New Desert Bighorn Sheep Opportunities

For the first time ever, three brand-new desert bighorn sheep hunt zones are being opened in the central Mojave Desert. These include the Granite and North Bristol Mountains (Zone 11), Providence, Woods, and Hackberry Mountains (Zone 12), and Castle Mountains and Piute Range (Zone 13).

These previously unhunted areas represent rare, premium opportunities for one of California’s most coveted big game species. Along with these new zones, tag numbers are increasing—from 27 in 2025 to 30 in 2026—adding five new tags and slightly improving already long odds.

Expanded Elk Opportunities

Elk hunters are also seeing a boost, with approximately 20 new bull tags being introduced across several hunts. These additions span archery, muzzleloader, and general methods seasons in areas such as Bishop, Lone Pine, Tinemaha, and Independence.

While still highly limited-entry, any increase in elk tags is a meaningful step forward in a state where demand far exceeds supply.

These changes are pending final approval this April by the California Fish and Game Commission, which is widely expected to approve them.

Mark Your Calendar: Application Deadline

The 2026 Big Game Drawing application period opens on April 15, 2026, and closes at midnight on June 2, 2026. Hunters planning to take advantage of these new opportunities should prepare early and ensure their applications are submitted on time.

Plan Your Season with Hunterizer

For California hunters looking to stay ahead, the Hunterizer app now includes seasons, zone details, and regulation summaries for all 49 huntable species in California, with fully updated 2026 seasons for big game.

Whether you’re scouting new zones, planning multi-species hunts, or just keeping track of deadlines, Hunterizer puts the entire season in your pocket—making it easier than ever to capitalize on the expanded opportunities coming in 2026.
