A black bear hunt in eastern Idaho took a dramatic turn on May 16 when a hunter shot and killed a charging grizzly bear while hunting with his young son near Cave Falls Road in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest outside Ashton. After investigating the incident, Idaho Fish and Game determined the hunter acted lawfully in defense of life.
According to Idaho Fish and Game, the hunter and his son were sitting at the edge of a meadow when they spotted a grizzly crossing open ground. After apparently catching their scent, the bear reportedly changed direction and moved toward them. The hunters attempted to alert the animal to their presence, but the encounter escalated quickly into a charge.
The hunter initially fired a sidearm, then transitioned to his hunting rifle, killing the bear at extremely close range—within about five yards, according to the agency. The incident was immediately reported to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, and Fish and Game investigators concluded the shooting met Idaho’s legal standard for defense of life.
For Idaho hunters, especially spring black bear hunters, the incident underscores a reality that’s becoming increasingly relevant in parts of the state: grizzly encounters are possible well beyond Yellowstone’s immediate footprint. The Island Park / Ashton region sits within occupied grizzly habitat, and hunters pursuing black bears in thick spring cover may have very little reaction time if an encounter goes bad.
Grizzly bears remain federally protected in Idaho, meaning killing one is generally prohibited unless necessary to protect human life. That makes quick reporting essential after any such incident.
Idaho Fish and Game routinely advises hunters in grizzly country to carry readily accessible bear spray, hunt with partners when possible, stay alert for fresh sign, and take extra caution around carcasses, creek bottoms, and dense vegetation where surprise encounters are more likely.
For hunters headed into Idaho’s spring bear woods, this incident is a sharp reminder: knowing what season is open is only part of the equation—knowing what else may be sharing that country matters too.
