Notable Changes for 2026–2027 season
The biggest regulatory changes heading into the 2026–2027 New York hunting seasons involve deer management.
Earlier this summer, DEC finalized a new Earn-a-2nd-Buck system designed to encourage greater antlerless deer harvests. Under the new regulations:
- Hunters receive a primary Antlered Deer Tag.
- Hunters who first harvest and report an antlerless deer using qualifying tags become eligible for a second antlered deer tag.
- Bow and muzzleloader privileges now include dedicated antlerless tags.
- Several Wildlife Management Units also received expanded opportunities for early antlerless hunting.
These changes are intended to improve deer population management while providing additional hunting opportunities across many areas of the state.
