NWTF Success Stories: Major Investment in Wisconsin Projects
EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The Wisconsin State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) recently convened in Reedsburg to evaluate proposals for the Hunting Heritage Super Fund for 2026. The Wisconsin NWTF Board of Directors approved these proposals, allocating $116,982 for conservation initiatives and $50,000 for education and outreach efforts. This funding will support events, chapter scholarships, and 4-H shooting sports programs. Notably, the NWTF Super Fund project awards will be complemented by over $6.2 million in partner or grant funds for the selected projects.
“The projects awarded funding in 2026 highlight the significance of the NWTF mission to our volunteers and members in Wisconsin,” stated Clayton Lenk, NWTF district biologist for Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. “From major land acquisitions to enhancing critical turkey habitat on both public and private lands, the Wisconsin NWTF State Chapter is proud to collaborate with our partners to advance the NWTF mission.”
The NWTF’s Super Fund operates as a funding model where NWTF volunteers generate funds through banquets and other fundraising events, directing a substantial portion back into impactful conservation and outreach projects within their states and beyond.
These initiatives aim to protect essential habitats in Wisconsin by supporting various efforts, including timber stand improvements with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, additional funding for an ongoing wild turkey research project in Wisconsin, and oak savanna and barren restoration projects in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Furthermore, land acquisition efforts with Ducks Unlimited will enhance the Avon Bottoms Wildlife Area, among other projects. Collectively, these actions contribute to maintaining healthy ecosystems, restoring critical habitats, and conserving wildlife populations throughout the state.
In addition, several projects are crucial for education, outreach, and improving hunter access in Wisconsin. These initiatives include sponsoring the Wisconsin Society of American Foresters’ annual conference, supporting the Prescribed Fire for Forest Management Webinar Series at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and contributing to the Midwest Outdoor Heritage Education Expo (MOHEE), among others. These efforts bolster professional development, enhance public awareness of conservation practices, and engage both novice and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
