Stay Safe This Season: Tips for Georgia’s Deer Mating and Hunting Season
As the crisp air of fall settles in, deer are on the move—and so are hunters! In Georgia, the overlap of mating season and hunting season calls for heightened safety measures both on the roads and in the woods.
The fall season brings about the rut, the breeding period when bucks are most active and visible. This increased activity is why drivers often encounter more deer near roadways, leading to a rise in vehicle collisions during this time of year.
According to researchers from the University of Georgia, deer are involved in approximately 50,000 accidents annually, accounting for nearly 14% of all vehicle collisions across the state.
“You’ll notice a surge in buck activity,” explains Tripp Colter, a wildlife biologist with the Deer Management Assistance Program at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “Bucks that typically remain hidden are now on the move, especially during daylight hours.”
If a deer suddenly crosses your path while driving, Colter advises against swerving. “It’s safer to hit the deer than to veer off course,” he cautions. “If you see a deer, slow down if possible, and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel.”
While deer are crossing highways, hunters are flocking to the woods. The archery and primitive weapon seasons are already underway, with rifle season kicking off in October. With more people enjoying the great outdoors, safety is paramount.
Colter notes that many hunting-related accidents occur due to falls from tree stands. “We frequently see serious injuries, including broken necks and paralysis,” he warns. “Wearing a safety harness while climbing and securing it once you’re up there is essential.”
The Department of Natural Resources even analyzes deer-vehicle collisions to determine the peak periods of rut activity, underscoring the vital role hunters play in managing deer populations effectively and safely.
As the hunting season progresses, Colter reminds all participants to wear their orange vests and practice proper firearm safety.
