Georgia Hunting Regulations 2025-2026: Complete Guide

Georgia offers a mix of private-land hunting, a broad WMA system, quota hunts for certain opportunities, mandatory harvest reporting for deer, turkey, alligator, and bears, and zone-based rules that matter most for deer, bear, and public-land turkey planning.

Overview of Hunting in Georgia

Georgia is one of the most versatile hunting states in the Southeast. A hunter can pursue whitetails across much of the state, hunt turkeys on both private and public land, chase doves and other migratory birds, or plan WMA-based trips for bear, small game, and quota opportunities. What makes Georgia different from some western states is that success often depends less on giant blocks of public access and more on understanding where your hunt falls: private land versus public land, WMA-specific rules, bear zone, county-specific deer either-sex dates, and whether a quota or check-in requirement applies.

For planning purposes, Georgia is best understood as four overlapping systems: private land hunting, public land hunting on WMAs and selected federal lands, species-specific licensing and harvest-record requirements, and quota-based access for certain hunts. Once you understand those four pieces, the rest of the regulations become much easier to navigate.

Public Hunting Lands in Georgia

Georgia’s public hunting network revolves around Wildlife Management Areas, supplemented by selected federal properties and other managed lands. Georgia DNR provides an interactive hunting map so hunters can find opportunities by location and species.

Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)

WMAs are the backbone of Georgia public hunting. These properties vary substantially in size, habitat, ownership, access rules, and hunt structure. Some are open-access; others include leased recreation areas or quota-limited opportunities. It is not enough to know that a property is public. You also need to check the individual-area rules, open dates, sign-in or check-in procedures, and whether the hunt is open access or quota-limited.

Federal and Special Properties

Georgia hunters also use federal properties such as parts of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, where opportunities include deer, bear, turkey, and small game. These areas bring additional federal or site-specific restrictions, including no baiting, no night hunting, and restrictions on loaded firearms in vehicles. Other special opportunities such as Cumberland Island or Fort Eisenhower involve managed hunts, permits, or military-installation rules.

Species to Hunt in Georgia

Big Game

White-tailed deer are the centerpiece of Georgia hunting, with long statewide frameworks but meaningful county-level and weapon-specific nuance. Black bear hunting is limited to designated bear zones, and alligator hunting is quota-based. Wild turkey is one of Georgia’s signature species, but public-land turkey rules are tighter than private-land rules.

Season runs November through February. Georgia remains one of the few states with meaningful wild quail hunting.

Rabbit
Rabbit

Season runs November through February on both private and WMA lands.

Squirrel
Squirrel

One of the longest seasons in Georgia, running August through February.

Raccoon and Opossum
Raccoon and Opossum

No closed season on private land; public-land season runs August through February.

Migratory Birds and Waterfowl

Dove hunting is a major early-season draw, and migratory bird opportunities extend to woodcock, snipe, rails, and waterfowl. For ducks and geese, Georgia points hunters to a separate migratory bird and waterfowl regulations resource.

Small Game and Furbearers

Georgia offers classic small-game hunting for quail, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, and raccoon or opossum. Fox and bobcat seasons are established statewide, while some species such as coyotes may be governed by season-specific weapon and land-status constraints.

Licenses, Permits, and Hunter Education

Georgia requires hunters to think in layers. The base hunting license is only the starting point. Depending on species and hunt type, you may also need a big game license, a free harvest record, migratory bird privileges, a federal duck stamp, quota authorization, or a property-specific permit.

RequirementWhat it means in Georgia
Basic hunting licenseResidents age 16-64 can buy an annual hunting license; Georgia also offers combo and short-term options. Nonresidents have separate pricing.
Big game layerDeer, bear, and turkey require a Big Game License in addition to the hunting license where applicable.
Harvest RecordA free Harvest Record is required for deer, turkey, alligator, and bear in the Northern Zone. Hunters record the kill before moving the animal, then complete official reporting within 24 hours.
Migratory bird layerMigratory bird hunting, including dove, requires the Georgia migratory/waterfowl bird privilege. Duck and goose hunting also requires a Federal Duck Stamp.
Hunter educationResidents and nonresidents born on or after January 1, 1961 must complete hunter education before buying a season hunting license, subject to Georgia’s stated exceptions.

How to Get a Hunting License in Georgia

Georgia sells licenses through Go Outdoors Georgia online and through license agents. The base hunting license is the starting point, but many Georgia hunts require an extra layer beyond that first purchase.

Official online license sales: gooutdoorsgeorgia.com

  • Buy the correct resident, nonresident, youth, short-term, or annual hunting license through Go Outdoors Georgia.
  • Add the Big Game License, migratory bird privilege, federal duck stamp, quota authorization, or other species-specific layer your hunt requires.
  • If you plan to hunt deer, turkey, bear, or alligator, make sure your free Harvest Record and required reporting steps are set up before the hunt, not after the harvest.

WMAs, Quota Hunts, and Game Check

Georgia runs quota hunts across multiple categories, including certain deer, alligator, waterfowl, turkey, dove, quail, youth, and mobility-impaired opportunities. Applications are submitted through Go Outdoors Georgia. This means access to some of the best public opportunities is not first-come, first-served.

For deer, turkey, alligator, and bears, Georgia requires official harvest reporting within 24 hours. Hunters must also enter the harvest date and county before moving a deer, turkey, or bear from the kill site. Bears have additional tagging requirements beyond basic reporting.

Important Georgia-Specific Planning Notes

  • Do not treat public land and private land as interchangeable, especially for turkey. Georgia uses different public-land timing and restrictions.
  • Do not rely on a single statewide deer rule. County either-sex timing and certain county-level firearms restrictions still matter.
  • If your hunt touches a WMA, check whether the area requires sign-in, check-in, quota selection, or a specific access rule.
  • For deer, turkey, alligator, and bears, build harvest-record and Game Check steps into your routine before the trip, not after the kill.
  • For bear hunting, confirm the zone and tagging requirements.
  • For ducks and geese, use the dedicated Georgia migratory bird resource.

Access Reality

Compared with some western states, Georgia public access is more fragmented and more rules-driven. A hunter should assume that the exact property matters. Some WMAs require a license simply to access land, while others do not, and a separate hunting license is still required to hunt where applicable. That is why map-based planning is especially useful in Georgia: finding a property is only the first step; matching that property to the correct season, species, and access regime is the real task.

2025-26 Georgia Season Overview

The sections below translate the official Georgia season framework into narrative form. Hunters should still verify county, WMA, and species-specific details before the hunt.

Deer

Archery only, either sex, opens statewide on September 13, 2025. Primitive weapons and youth-only firearms run October 11-17. Statewide firearms, buck only, run October 18 through January 11, with either-sex dates varying by county. Georgia lists a 12-deer season limit statewide, with no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered deer, and one of the antlered deer must meet the state’s antler or spread standard.

Bear

Bear hunting is zone-based. In the Northern Zone, archery begins September 13, primitive weapons start October 11, and firearms begin October 18. The Central Zone has a short firearms season in December, and the Southern Zone has short firearms windows in September and October. The statewide limit is two bears per season, but no more than one may come from the Central or Southern bear zones.

Turkey

For the 2026 spring season, private-land turkey season runs from March 28 through May 15. Public-land turkey season opens later, on April 4, and runs through May 15. The statewide season limit is two gobblers, daily bag one; public lands are restricted to one gobbler per season per area.

Alligator

Alligator season is zone- and quota-limited, running from August 15, 2025 at sunset through October 6, 2025 at sunrise, with one alligator per quota permit.

Dove and Small Game

Dove season opens in early September with split segments through late January. Quail runs from November 8 through February 28. Rabbit from November 15 through February 28. Squirrel from August 15 through February 28. Grouse from October 15 through February 28, and woodcock from December 6 through January 19. Raccoon and opossum have no closed season on private land; public-land season runs from August 15 through February 28.

Waterfowl and Migratory Birds

Georgia directs hunters to a separate migratory-bird and waterfowl resource for the full waterfowl package. That is the right place to confirm ducks, geese, HIP-type requirements, and other migratory bird details before the season.

How Hunterizer Fits Georgia

A Georgia regulations page works best when it frames the state as location-sensitive rather than merely date-sensitive. The message to the reader: Georgia is manageable once you know the county, land status, WMA, quota status, and species. That positioning lines up well with Hunterizer’s value, because the app helps turn a broad state rulebook into specific, on-the-ground decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does deer season open in Georgia 2025?

Georgia archery deer season on private land opens in mid-September 2025, while firearms season opens later in the fall. County and zone details still matter.

What hunting license do I need in Georgia?

Georgia hunters start with a hunting license, then add the Big Game License, WMA access, migratory bird privileges, or other layers as their hunt requires.

What is the deer bag limit in Georgia?

Georgia has a combined deer bag limit with separate limits on antlered and antlerless deer, but hunters should always confirm the current statewide and zone-specific rules before the season.

Can I hunt turkey in Georgia?

Yes, Georgia has a spring turkey season with separate private-land and public-land timing. Public-land turkey access is more restrictive than many hunters expect.

What is a WMA license in Georgia?

A WMA-related access or license layer is required for many Georgia public-land hunts. Hunters should confirm both the property rules and the license package before going afield.
