UPSHUR COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – Over the weekend, a group of 19 active and inactive military members came together for a complimentary deer hunting and fishing trip in East Texas, organized by the nonprofit Combat Warriors.
These veterans, all of whom have combat experience, traveled from various parts of the country for this multi-day event that included hunting, fishing, and shared meals. Among the attendees was Richard Miranda, a 25-year Army veteran from Nashville, Tennessee.
“It’s not like the end of a war, where you have a big parade to celebrate victory. Instead, it’s more of a gradual return home, and guys come back piece by piece,” Miranda reflected on the transition from military to civilian life.
The veterans were welcomed with a full law enforcement escort from East Texas Regional Airport to a ranch in Harrison County, near Diana. This procession was organized by Upshur County Precinct 1 Constable Tim Barnette.
“Longview P.D. does a phenomenal job of just helping us get through their city,” Barnette noted.
Students from Judson Middle School in Longview lined Judson Road with flags to greet the veterans as they passed by.
“I was really taken aback by how you guys took time out of your day to stand on the road just to see us drive by. It was a pleasant surprise to realize that someone actually appreciated what we did,” Miranda said, reflecting on the warm reception.
Combat Warriors Inc., which originated in North Carolina, has since expanded into several states, including Texas. The organization provides free hunting licenses, rifles, and meals to participants.
“But then you come back to something like this and you really feel that someone cares about the sacrifice I made. I truly appreciate it,” Miranda expressed.
The veterans gathered for lunch and a group photo before embarking on their hunting and fishing activities.
