New Kentucky Law Limits Drone Use in Hunting and Fishing

Attention all hunting and fishing enthusiasts in Kentucky: there’s an important update that you need to know! The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has announced a new law that places restrictions on the use of drones during these outdoor activities.

As of October 16, following a session of the Kentucky Interim Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Energy, an administrative regulation has officially taken effect. This regulation makes it illegal to use any aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles, for capturing fish or wildlife.

This law aims to promote fairness and safety in outdoor recreation for everyone. While drones can be used for scouting wildlife—provided they don’t assist in the actual taking of an animal—there are clear limitations. For example, if a drone helps locate a deceased animal, the operator is permitted to inform you of its location for recovery purposes.

However, using drones to hunt, shoot, wound, trap, or herd wildlife is strictly prohibited. Additionally, guiding a hunter to a live animal spotted by a drone is also against the rules. These regulations apply across the entire state, covering both public and private lands.

For those seeking more information, you can visit the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s official website or reach out to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Information Center at 800-858-1549.

Stay informed and enjoy your time in the great outdoors responsibly!
