BOISE, Idaho — A hunter died early Thursday while attempting to pack out an elk in a remote area near Bald Mountain, the Boise County Sheriff’s Office said.
Boise County said its dispatch received a text to 911 around 3 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, stating that a member of the hunting party was down and needed help. The hunters had harvested an elk the day before and were returning to camp when the incident occurred, according to the sheriff’s office.
“EMS was notified by state communications but due to the location ambulance services could not reach the hunters,” Boise County wrote in a news release.
The hunters did CPR, but the man did not survive, officials said.
Boise County said due to severe weather and the remote terrain, recovery efforts did not begin until 9 a.m. Boise County Search and Rescue members rode dirt bikes into the area and found the deceased hunter. Boise County Sheriff’s deputies and a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer retrieved the body and transported it to the county coroner at the Boise County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office urged recreationists to take precautions when visiting remote mountain areas.
“The further you go into the mountains the more difficult it can make it for first responders to reach you in an emergency,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials recommended knowing the area, being aware of physical condition, carrying reliable communication and location devices, staying hydrated, resting when needed and having equipment to stay dry and warm.
The name of the man has not been released.
