Dog Accidentally Shoots Owner in Back After Jumping on Shotgun Left on Bed, Police Report
A 53-year-old man from Pennsylvania is currently hospitalized following an incident where his dog reportedly discharged a shotgun, injuring him in the back, according to the Shillington Police Department.
On Tuesday at approximately 11:13 p.m., authorities received calls about a shooting, indicating that a man had sustained a gunshot wound to his back, as detailed in a press release obtained by ABC News.
While officers were en route to the location, they learned that a dog had “jumped onto the bed and set the gun off.” Upon arrival, police found the man conscious on the floor.
The victim explained to police that he had been cleaning his shotgun before the incident and had placed the firearm on his bed. After sitting down on the bed, one of his dogs jumped up, causing the weapon to fire a round into his lower back.
At the time of the shooting, the man was at home with his son and two other dogs. His son was reportedly not in the same room when the incident occurred.
Following the shooting, paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery for his injuries.
Hospital staff informed police on Wednesday that the man had completed an initial surgery but would require another operation either that day or the next. As of Thursday, the extent of his injuries remains unknown, according to police statements to ABC News.
The shooting is being treated as accidental, but authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
